PrintStones is an Austrian start-up and spin-off of the Vienna University of Technology that deals with automation in construction industry and whose focus lies on the development of 3D printing processes for concrete and other cementitious materials. The group searched for possibilities of automated production of these components from 3D models and applied to INITS, the No. 1 High-Tech Incubator in DACH Region to push forward against +200 competing startups (Figure 1). Following the Incubator Camp No. 7, the group has developed a mobile device which can help customers print components in various forms, colors and surface textures directly on the construction site while reducing the CO2 and particulate matter pollution during construction. The PrintStones X1 mobile printing device is an early prototype and currently used in several pilot projects in and around Vienna. The construction process allows the additive manufacturing of stones in an defined area, the relocation of the system and the continuation of the printing. Thereby the mobile device is located directly on the pervious concrete layer of the pavement’s substructure, so the manufactured stones don’t need to be moved anymore. As the pilot projects span over various possible applications, the system was further used to print façade panels and concrete formwork in an exceptional printing resolution. The excellence of execution required in this complex project could only be archived by a combination of a high performance team with an scientific team at TU Wien. On the way, various cementitious materials have been developed - compressive strength tests show that the required compressive strength was reached with ease.
