Berlin’s “disaster airport” is known as one of Europe’s biggest examples of loss-making planning, immense delays and tremendous cost increases. However, problems like quality defects, insufficient communication, lacking documentation or faulty workmanship are not only known at large construction sites. Worldwide, international construction projects suffer from incomplete information flow just as private house buildings. Efficient construction requires excellent planning to identify and define resources, involved companies, timetables and cost structures.
BCM addresses the concept of lean construction. It regulates relationships between tasks and users and improves coordination between dependencies. The competitive advantages such as optimized information flow between all actors, cutting of unnecessary costs and improve of quality by sharing information among all actors through a single platform are unique. Compared to other solutions BCM organizes the whole construction process and does not focus on single requirements. It allows to schedule material and staff resources on time, execute quality checks and keep on track of tasks and latest information.
The approach of BCM is holistic and sustainable: A single platform optimizes construction management and accompanies construction from planning to execution. It even provides information that is useful after the project, as e.g. changes of built-in tools are recorded and can be checked up afterwards Technical interfaces allow the exchange of information and the connection of additional technologies that are important in construction (e.g. BIM, time recording) and increase acceptance.
The recent trends of digitalization and the move-in of mobile devices (tablet PC, mobile phones) to everyday life make the success of BCM possible. However, construction could not yet benefit from the advantages of digitalization as other sectors did. Mobile devices are common practice, but processes for collaboration, documentation and communication are still manually handled.
The development of BCM started in 2014 with the aim to ease up coordination activities. In 2016, the experimental proof of concept was successfully implemented. 2017, the first demonstration system, called BauMaster, was successfully released in German-speaking countries
